Torah Pointer
Torah Pointer (Yad laTorah)
Traditionally crafted from silver, the Yad (meaning "hand") or Torah Pointer
is a ritual object is used when reading from the parchment Torah scrolls.
It is used to prevent anyone from touching the sacred Torah (readings from
the Five Books of Moses). The writing on the parchment is not of ink so
touching with fingers will ruin the lettering. The Torah Pointer is shaped
like a long rod with a hand and an index finger pointing from it.
Yad laTorah can be made from materials other than silver, but silver is the
standard. They are often given as gifts for Bar Mitzvahs and Bat Mitzvahs
and can be very intricate such as those offered on www.Rotem.net (Rotem
Online) created by Israeli artist and master silversmith, Garshi. |
