Siddur
A Siddur is a Jewish Prayer Book that is used on Shabbat and weekdays throughout the year. Siddur in Hebrew means “order” and different prayers are said in a specific order and under different circumstances. For instance, there is a Morning Prayer called the “Shacharis”, and Afternoon Prayer called the “Yitzchak” and the “Maariv”, said in the evening, the “Shemoney Esray”, eighteen blessings which the Jewish people use to pray to G-d. There are also special prayers said when mourning (the “Kaddesh”). A set of prayers, or “siddurim”, relevant for Shabbat and holidays, are more prevalent within any given synagogue and serve as the primer of spirituality for Jewish life.
There are also different prayer book versions, such as the “Sim Shalom Siddur” that offers the option of adding in the matriarchs of Judaism like Sara, Rebecca and Rachel in addition to the patriarchs Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Many Siddur books come in or are adorned with a beautiful cover. There are several styles offered by Rotem Online (www.rotem.net) that are hand-crafted by award-winning Jack Jaget of Israel. Jack beautifully binds the Siddur Avodat Israel in Hebrew with English with a decorative pattern then uses a special lacquer to protect it. It is then finished with decorative gold-plated latches, hinges and protective corners, giving it the look of the Middle Ages, the feeling of time past. |
