Havdalah Sets
The Havdalah ritual is one that takes place at the end of Shabbat. Havdalah
means "separation" and the ritual signifies the end of Shabbat and separates
it from the weekdays. The time for the Havdalah is when three stars appear
in the night sky.
There are three items that are used during Havdalah: wine, fragrant spices
and the Havdalah candle. A Kiddush cup is over-filled with wine as it
symbolizes two things: our wish for the blessings of Shabbat to overflow
into the coming week and prosperity.
Fragrant and sweet spices, usually allspice and cloves are placed in the
Havdalah spice holder. This symbolizes the extra soul (attuned to the
spiritual world during Shabbat) leaving when Shabbat ends; the smell of the
spices is meant to "revive" the individual as it departs.
Finally, the special Havdalah candle is lit. The flame represents the
separation between the spiritual world and the material world and also
represents the first light of Creation, renewed energy for the upcoming week
and new beginnings.
There are many styles of Havdalah sets, each a very personal choice of the
observer. Rotem Online (www.rotem.net) carries a variety of Havdalah sets.
Sterling silver Havdalah sets by artists such as Israeli silversmiths Aaron
Capri, Eisenshtain, Achseff are available and a hand-painted wooden Havdalah
set from Yair Emanuel is available as well. These are beautiful sets to use
for the Havdalah ritual and make wonderful gifts for the Jewish family. |
